Understanding Corporate Sustainability Disclosures from the Securities Exchange Commission Filings

As sustainability becomes fundamental to companies, voluntary and mandatory disclosures or corporate practices have become a key source of information for various stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, environmental watchdogs, nonprofits NGOs, investors, shareholders, the public at large. Understanding by analyzing large volume poses major challenges, given that is mostly in form text. Applying machine learning text analytic methods, we analyzed approximately 25,428 disclosure reports period 2011 2020, extracted from Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) filings made available Ceres website via application programming interfaces (APIs). Our study identified six industry clusters K-means main topics latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) method related climate-change-related concerns. Both methods produced overlapping results further reinforce enhance our understanding levels, such as sector, industry, topic. analysis shows companies are concerned primarily with gas emission, carbon risk, climate change, loss damage, renewable energy, financial impact when disclosing issues government. The has implications practices, communication dissemination stakeholders furthering general.
